Pilgrim's Progress...

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (PG-13)
Directed by Edgar Wright and Starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, and Jason Schwartzman

I honestly had no clue what this movie was going to be like.  I knew from the trailer that it would, in fact, be something completely different and because of that, would either pass as an original and fun master work or fail horribly.  Although, the critics and the box office consider it as a failure, I personally absolutely loved it.  And, I have no doubt that this movie will find it's cult audience and following.

The premise is this:  Boy falls in love with girl but in order to get girl, he must face and defeat her seven "evil" ex's.  I know... it sounds utterly ridiculous, but it is an absolute fun ride.  The writers and director have done an amazing job of making you feel like you are living in a video game.  The fight scenes are inspired by anime movies and TV shows and shot with top notch special effects and give you the video game feel very effectively.

The allegory is simple (we all go through hard lessons in trying to find love in our lives), but it's the execution of the story telling that is wholly original and welcomed as a breath of fresh air.

The movie is fun, funny, action packed, serious in the right moments, and the point is driven home with skill and a creative touch.

I loved this movie and can't wait to see it again.

Enjoy.
