Winter's Bone (R)
Directed by Debra Granik and Starring Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan and Garret Dillahunt
Filmed on location in Missouri and based on a best-selling novel from an Ozark native, this story follows a darkened path of a young teen girl forced to raise a family on her own in the Ozark mountains. As her father skips bail and apparently town, this strong young girl has to find him and bring him to the authorities before the family loses their home and livelihood.
Based on actual events from the early nineties, this story captures the heart of the Ozark mountain life. It is a life that young Ree Dolly dreams of escaping someday.
WINTER'S BONE is beautifully filmed and constructed. And, although it was only released in limited cities, I would say that its production would hold its own against any major studio released film out there. It was the surprise hit at the Sundance Film Festival (winning Best Picture and Screenplay) and it was a surprise hit with me.
I believe it will be released on DVD and BLU-RAY sometime next month (pretty soon, anyway) and if you like suspenseful thrillers with a little mystery in the mix, check it out and enjoy.
