Alice in Wonderland (PG)
Directed by Tim Burton and Starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover and Mia Wasikowska
I know I'm a little late and a little behind, but life is life and time is sparse sometimes... as we are all (sometimes) painfully aware.
A couple of weeks ago, I set up an event for whomever wanted to come to come see Alice in Wonderland in the amazing third dimension. I had an awesome outcome of people show up (there were eight or ten total) and we had a really good time watching it and catching up afterward. So, thank you everyone for coming!
Now, focusing on the movie, I have to confess that I have never read either Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. I'm sure I'm not the only one. But, after watching the movie, I felt myself in obvious reflection about what was really in those stories. My preconceptions were pretty far off.
As for the movie itself, I liked it. Like many Tim Burton films, it certainly has its own odd stamp plastered all over it, but I can see that Burton has grown up in his films and his film style. He seems to be choosing films that are proven vehicles for his style and nature. I like that.
It had it's strange moments, but hey, it's Wonderland, right? It's supposed to be "strange". The only thing that threw me (and I won't ruin it for you... wink) was that there didn't seem to be as much tension on an aspect of the ending that there could have been-- 'nuff said.
The adventure of Alice and her trials through Wonderland are a pleasant little mysterious trip. Some is familiar and some might be steps taken on newer ground. But, still pleasant nonetheless.
I definitely need to read the books to see if those who adapted the books to the screenplay were taking from or changing to. I'm curious to find out.
All in all, a great movie (a little slow in parts) and mostly family friendly. I'd say it pushes up against it's PG rating like teen flirtation, but overall it's pretty PG.
See it in 3D :)
Enjoy.
