Take a long, long walk...

The Road (R)
Directed by John Hillcoat and Starring Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, and Kodi Smit-McPhee and with special appearances by Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce

The Light and the dark. Good and evil. The truth and the lie. Beginnings and endings... these are a simple few and basic themes that you can always find at the core of any movie. There are many more and stories worth telling can rarely be so simple to describe, but for my purposes today we will keep the theme simple.

The Road is about endings and, in a sense, beginnings. The ending to something we all know and it's also about the rebirth of something we don't; the end of the civilization as we know it and what's left is a beginning passed on to others.

That is a pretty simple summary. There is a depth to the simpleness, though; a depth that is very well played out in one of the most loving and passionate relationships i've seen on screen in a long time.  It is the depth of true love a father can have for his son.

The man and his young son are survivors of an unknown "event" that kills millions and brings what we know to ruin. They stay hidden away in their home for as long as they can until the father realizes that if they stay any longer, it means certain death. So, they start a journey of hope and danger heading south down the road looking for a "safe" place and possibly others who can help. The journey is hard, but the father's love is always known and his son's protection is first and foremost in his thoughts.

These are the kind of movies I find myself drawn to. Darkness, loss, tragedy; suffering tinged with just enough light that maybe, just maybe, there is evidence of hope and a reason to move on in search of that hope.

Hope is Strong.
Love is Stronger.

They are worth having and I believe they can defeat the darkness within us all as well as the darkness that surrounds us.

Enjoy.
